Jackie and Shadow Spotted Safe After Fireworks
Share
The morning after Big Bear Lake’s Fourth of July fireworks show was unusually quiet. The typical calls of songbirds and rustling of wildlife seemed to be replaced by an eerie stillness. With no sightings of Jackie or Shadow, the area’s beloved resident bald eagle pair, concern quickly spread among eagle watchers and nature lovers.
But just as the sun began to dip behind the mountains, relief came. Around 5:30 PM, one of the adults performed a reassuring flyby. And then, at 7:06 PM, Shadow appeared—flying strong and steady to the Twin Pine Tree, one of Jackie and Shadow’s favorite new roosting spots. Seven minutes later, Jackie joined him, calling out in that familiar voice we’ve all come to love.
Their reunion was not only heartwarming—it was a powerful reminder of the resilience of Big Bear’s wildlife.
Are Sunny and Gizmo Still in Big Bear?
Another concern was for this year’s fledglings, Sunny and Gizmo, who took their first flights back in early June. Since bald eagle chicks aren’t typically exposed to loud, human-caused noises, the fireworks may have startled them away if they remained nearby. It’s still unclear whether they are currently in the Big Bear area—but these young eagles are strong, smart, and capable.
As always, we’ll continue to observe the area and keep you updated with sightings.
Big Bear’s Only Known Nesting Bald Eagles
Jackie and Shadow have been Big Bear’s only known year-round nesting bald eagle pair since 2018. They’ve weathered storms, raised multiple eaglets, and shown remarkable strength in the wild. Their continued presence is a beautiful reminder of what makes this mountain ecosystem so special.
And right now, during the warm summer months, Big Bear is also home to many visiting feathered friends—perfect for birdwatchers of all ages. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just picking up binoculars for the first time, this is a great time to get outside and start spotting.
