Nest Defense, Mating & Clutch Hopes in Big Bear

Nest Defense, Mating & Clutch Hopes in Big Bear

It’s been an eventful week at the Big Bear eagle nest, and all signs point to exciting days ahead for Jackie and Shadow.

After fiercely defending their lakeview “high-rise” from visiting eagles over the weekend, our resident bald eagle pair has settled back into a calmer rhythm. The message was clearly delivered: this nest belongs to Jackie and Shadow. With the territory secure, the focus has shifted back to what matters most—nest building, bonding, and possibly more eggs in the 2026 clutch.

Mating Activity Increases During Nesting Season

Yesterday brought encouraging signs for eagle cam viewers. Jackie and Shadow were seen mating twice on the Lookout Snag, once mid-morning and again in the afternoon. While bonded bald eagle pairs mate year-round, activity often increases during egg-laying season to improve fertilization success.

For those tracking the timeline: this is exactly what we expect to see when a new clutch may be on the way.

Western Bluebirds & Peaceful Perches

Earlier in the day, before the eagles returned to the nest, a lively group of Western bluebirds briefly gathered for a colorful visit. It’s always a treat to see other wildlife enjoying the habitat around Big Bear Lake.

Later, Jackie spent time perched alone before Shadow joined her. The two shared quiet conversations and bonding moments—reminding us why their partnership has become such a beloved wildlife love story.

Jackie Pancakes. Shadow Jumps.

When they finally returned to the nest, Jackie immediately got to work digging and fluffing the nest bowl, preparing it for potential new eggs. Then came the moment eagle cam fans won’t forget:

Jackie pancaked—laying flat to shape and test the bowl—directly in Shadow’s path to the back porch.

Rather than disrupt her work, Shadow assessed the situation… and leapt cleanly over her.

Mission accomplished.
Jackie didn’t even look up.

These subtle interactions highlight the coordination and experience of a seasoned nesting pair.

What’s Next for Jackie & Shadow?

With recent mating behavior, bowl preparation, and territory defense behind them, the conditions are aligning for a possible new egg announcement soon.

As always, we’ll be watching closely.
