Wildfire Update & Wildlife Visitors: Big Bear’s Nesting Area Remains Safe 🦅🔥🌲
Share
As of this week, the nearby Gold Fire reported early Monday is 15% contained, and the skies above Big Bear Lake have cleared of smoke. While the fire remains active northeast of the area, it has not threatened Jackie and Shadow’s nesting territory, and we’re deeply grateful to the brave fire crews working to keep the region safe.
Due to ongoing firefighting efforts—including helicopters retrieving water from the lake—it’s been normal to see less activity from Jackie and Shadow this week. Still, the nest has remained full of life and surprise visitors.
On Tuesday evening, an immature bald eagle perched in the Roost Tree—possibly one of this year’s fledglings. The next morning, this young eagle gave a stunning silhouette against the sunrise sky before branch-dancing and preening on the Cactus Snag, evoking memories of Gizmo and Sunny from earlier this season.
And the guest list didn’t stop there:
-
A bold Steller’s jay made a quick, noisy appearance
-
An adult red-tailed hawk and an acorn woodpecker paused to rest and observe the area
Though the Roost Tree was empty last night, Jackie’s chortles were heard early this morning—and we’re keeping talons crossed for more sightings soon.
